U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington is working on a deal to purchase potash from Belarus for less than what the U.S. currently pays to Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mineral helps improve a plant’s disease resistance and crop quality and \u2060increases yields.<\/span><\/p>\n

The announcement signals \u2060Trump’s willingness to use alternative suppliers as leverage in \u200chis trade disputes with Canada, which supplies the vast majority of U.S. potash imports. It could also mark a further thaw in Washington’s relations with Belarus after the lifting of sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Saskatchewan-based Nutrien, the world’s top potash producer, had no immediate \u2060comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russia, said on Sept. 11 that his country resumed selling potash to the United States following the lifting of U.S. sanctions. But Lukashenko also said he wants Washington to \u200creturn more than $40 million US that is stuck<\/span><\/q> in the U.S. banking system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Belarus and Russia are major potash producers, but sanctions and the closing of a key port on Lithuania’s Baltic coast have made those supplies expensive to ship to the U.S. through Russia’s Arctic. The U.S. is \u200bstill receiving potash exports from Russia, but the overwhelming majority of supply comes from Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fertilizer analyst Josh Linville of \u2060StoneX said he doubts Belarusian potash will play a major role in either supplies for U.S. farmers \u2060or in lowering prices that they presently pay.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m afraid the impact would be limited. We \u2060have \u2060not struggled to find potash,<\/span><\/q> he said. We \u200bhave more than enough to go around. It is phosphate and nitrogen that we need help with.<\/span><\/q><\/span><\/p>\n

Even if Lithuania \u200bopened its port of Klaipeda \u2060to Belarusian potash exports, the relatively low current value of potash makes it hard to justify exports through the Baltic and across the Atlantic Ocean, Linville said.<\/span><\/p>\n
